The Asian Era

It’s truly an exciting time in fashion. Between talks of presidential policies and domestic agendas, it’s refreshing to find even a mere moment to be creatively inspired. And the following designers certainly assuage our doubts that 21st century fashion can’t be tasteful and feminine, yet completely relevant and modern at the same time. Interestingly, these designers all happen to be Asian – a coincidence that is hard to overlook seeing that their aesthetics easily interplay with one another. Simplicity is a common thread found in all of their clothes but each designer has his or her own way of injecting charm and elegance – whether through intricate pleating and draping or accents that add dimension and personality. Introducing Phillip Lim, Vivienne Tam, Derek Lam, and Doo.Ri Chung!

We've all seen grecian inspired dresses before but what I love about this particular one is the asymmetrical neckline that forms a very clever and unique cap-sleeve. 3.1 Phillip Lim, Silk pleated Grecian dress, $795

Gorgeous Vivienne Tam yellow spring dress! The cinched waist creates a timeless silhouette but the flower cut-outs add a flirty element to an otherwise simple dress.

Derek Lam, the 2005 CFDA winner, is reknowned for his attention to detail and use of luxurious fabrics. This blouse and skirt combination is no exception. The blush tones in this bell-sleeve silk blouse are elegantly echoed in the detailed stitchings of the skirt. I also love how he was unafraid of pairing a blouse with such volume with a skirt that has subtle movement and flounce to it as well.

The Sheer Element was all over the runways in the New York and London Spring '08 fashion shows but this stunning sheath dress by Doo.Ri does the trend tastefully. The silk with net overlay hints at sensuality without being overtly kitsch. I also adore the double strapped detail and tulip skirt - whimsical yet completely practical and classy. Doo.Ri Runway Silk Sheath Dress $1,350.00
