"For broad understanding and deep feeling, you need pain and suffering. I believe really great men must experience great sadness in the world." - F.DostoevskyI'm currently re-reading Crime & Punishment by Dostoevsky and it's fascinating how this classic psychological thriller, coupled with the gloomy winter months, inspire me creatively. I've picked some looks and accessories that I feel capture the mood of the novel and the cultural zeitgeist of 19th century Russia -- dark, brooding, depraved. My personal style has evolved over the last several years and though I will always have a propensity for 1950s/60s Americana (fitted shift dresses, corseted tops with billowing full skirts, lady-like brooches and hourglass gowns), I've been more open to experimenting with darker/neutral colors and unusual silhouettes as of late. Even more interesting is melding the two different aesthetics into a marriage of refined sophistication and irreverence.
Below are some pieces that I feel speak to this dark milieu that Dostoevsky created. Note the heaviness of the corduroys, knits, and burlap leather...the uncertainty of the draping and deconstructed lines...and the erratic and wandering Marni-like patterns of the dresses.
