Michelle Obama donned a beautiful ivory one-shouldered gown made of delectable layers of silk chiffon and Swarovski crystals. YUM! And while not everyone was a fan of the dress, I was immediately struck with her fresh take on an inaugural garment - shying away from dowdy and frumpy dresses of the past. It was a silhouette that was unexpected and for that reason a great success. The dress was reflective of the change that was the cornerstone of her husbands campaign. Gone were the days of stiff silk taffeta in putrid brown/gold color palettes or over-sequined long sleeve monstrosities that typically adorn First Ladies. Here is a woman that is as comfortable dominating the Illinois Bar Exam as she is tackling a Thakoon Sample Sale. She is a prime example that being intelligent and fashionable is no longer mutually exclusive.

Jason Wu, the young ingenue who designed the dress, can finally garner success and recognition outside of the fashion elite. I've always been a fan of his work..his unique way of injecting youth and charm into a typical Park Avenue look. Known for his sheath dresses and structured lines, I imagine more women like Michelle to find great solace that we have a new American designer to re-ignite the fashion industry at its seams!

And then there's the Obama Girls. They looked every bit the part of America's First Kids, adorable in their custom made J.Crew Coats like a delicious blueberry and peach crumble confection. Their cheery dispositions throughout the long day exudes this childlike insouciance that I'm not certain would be found in all kids their age in the same position. They have grace and poise far beyond their years and I can't wait for them to grow up before our eyes against the magical backdrop of The White House.
